The Challenger's base 305-hp V-6 won't satisfy thrill seekers. It requires the Driver Convenience Group, too, which brings blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross-traffic alert, power mirrors, and high-intensity-discharge headlights. The Plus package improves the interior with ambient lighting, faux-suede seat inserts, and much nicer materials on the dashboard and doors. We'd also add the adaptive dampers for adjustable ride quality, and the Dynamics package for its wide 20-inch wheels, six-piston Brembo front brakes, and leather-wrapped steering wheel. ![]() Believe it or not, we'd opt for the eight-speed automatic over the standard manual transmission because it's much more responsive than the slushy-feeling stick shift. We'd select the R/T Scat Pack model for its 485-hp 6.4-liter V-8. Enthusiast drivers will find modern versions of the Chevrolet Camaro and the Ford Mustang more capable on twisty roads and racetracks, but the Challenger’s old-school charm is undeniable. The regular Challenger isn’t as intense as the outrageous Hellcat, but for some its V-8 burble and relatively comfortable ride will be enough to trigger nostalgic feelings for the vintage Dodge pony cars with which it shares a name. If you want even more power, Dodge will be happy to oblige with the big-stomper Challenger SRT Hellcat, which we review separately. A V-6 engine is standard in these non-SRT Challengers but the real fun comes with the optional naturally aspirated Hemi V-8 engines, which are offered in a variety of displacements and outputs spanning a 375-hp, 5.7-liter to a 485-hp, 6.4-liter. Stale gasoline can really affect how well an engine runs. While rival muscle cars have pivoted recently toward sharp handling, the 2023 Dodge Challenger keeps things retro with a package that’s designed more for old-school pony-car jollies and straight-line speed. The higher the octane of the gasoline the quicker it goes stale. ![]() The 93 might sit in the storage tank "too" long. This can be a risk with using 93 especially if it is priced something above 91. Regardless of which gasoline you use buy from a busy station to ensure you get the freshest gasoline. If you can try both types try them and see if you notice any benefit from running ethanol free. All 3 vehicles have low miles (the van has 15K miles, the Scat Pack maybe 7K miles) and better fueling (the van has a turbo charged engine). The Hellcat had 27K miles the M-B van I bought new in August of 2020 and the Scat Pack I bought new in November of 2020. Whether I fill up with 91 ethanol free or 91 with ethanol I can't tell which fuel is in the tank by how the engines run. This I think explains why with my Hellcat, and then with my M-B van, and now with my Scat Pack, none of these vehicles reacted to 91 ethanol free gasoline. The 1st car benefited from Chevron (with Techron) because it was not as clean running as the 2nd car. This I attribute to the the first car had more than double the miles the 2nd car had and the 2nd car's engine came with wide band O2 sensors for more precise fueling (the engine was twin turbo charged from the factory). OTOH, my other car didn't react good or bad to Chevron. One of my cars after not even a full tank of Chevron gasoline was running better. My belief is this is real but arises from vehicles/engines that have more miles than my Hellcat or my other cars have.Īs an aside in CA I switched from Shell V-Power to Chevron Supreme with Techron. Now some owners have reported some "benefit" to running 91 ethanol free. (At about a nickle/gallon price premium over 91 with ethanol.) I could not not notice any difference. Here I finally got a chance to use 91 ethanol free. ![]() In August 2020 I left CA and settled in Benton County AR. 91.įor years - lived in CA (mostly since 1971 with about 3 years spent living outside of CA) - and with various cars I have run 91 with ethanol. I have to wonder how much more 93 would cost per gallon vs. You can experiment and find out for yourself. Some owners have reported some noticeable benefit. There might be some benefit to be had from using 93. Click to expand.Haven't read the other posts but as long as you use 91 (at least) you can use 91 without ethanol.
